A Pensgard Genealogy
A
Genealogy given in outline form:
- Baard Tronsvoll
(dates unknown) married Gunnhild Jensdtr.
(dates unknown) having at least one son named Baar Baardsson. The
name Tronsvoll comes from "trons," which means "high up," and
"voll," which is a small, open piece of land. Thus, a "tronsvoll" is
a small, unwooded piece of land at a high altitude.
- Baar Baardsson (1755 -
1805) married Sidsel
Johnsdtr. (1754 - ?) having 4 children: One son was John Baarsen. This family lived in Vestboe, Sandeid, Vikedal, Prestesogn
(modern names).
- John Baarsen (1788 - 1845)
married Karen (Kari) Jensdtr. (1785-1862)
having 6 children: One son was Jens Jonsen Pensgard. During the
"great census" of 1801, this family was found in one of five
cotter's farms that they had pioneered at the southern part of
the farm at Sorvagen. Before 1815 the family had come from
Vestboe, Sandeid, Vikedal, Prestesogn. Karen was the daughter of
Jens Siovaldsen (1751 - ?) and Ingebor Osmundsdtr. (1752 - ?)
- Jens Johnsen Pensgard
(Pinskar?) (1816 -
1880) married Ingeborg Kristine
Endresdotter (1815 - ?) having 7 children: One son
was Jens Kristian Jensen Pensgard.
Jens Jonsen Pensgard was the first to be named
"Pensgard" being given a permanent family name. He was named
after the cotter's farm that his father pioneered. There is
some doubt about the name. Some think it was "Pinskar,"
which describes a narrow gap between two rocky hills (skar)
close to where the houses were built causing the southeast
wind to be forced between them (pine) resulting in "Pinskar".
However, Daniel Kallevik (Gardshistorie for Stegabergkrinsen)
thinks that it is very reasonable to conclude that Jon and
Karen gave the place the name "Pensgard" simply because it
was actually nice there. Pensgard literally means "pretty
yard/farm." Descendents in Haugesund write the name
"Pensgard" (with an a-ring) or "Pensgaard."
- Jens Kristian Jensen Pensgard
(1854 - 1934) married Ellen
Christine Johnson (1856 - 1938) (picture
available below) having 7 children: One son was
Christian Pensgard.
- Christian / Kristian Pensgard

Severine
Hakonsen (unknown dates) having 4 children. This
Christian moved to America when he was 15, about
1899. In a Norwegian neighborhood of Chicago,
Illinois, Christian met and married Severine (Rena)
who was from Haugesund, Norway.

find this location on another map, first look for Haugesund, then
move one fjord to the East. This is the Forresfjorden.

This last map is from a book indicating the plot within which
Pensgard is located. The larger plot is marked in orange. Click the

PENSGARD: 1.2
The first that settled at one of the five cotter´s farm that was
pioneered at the south oriented part of the farm at Sørvågen was
probably Jon Baarsen og Karen Jensdotter. They came probably before
1815 from Vikedal Prestesogn. The cotter´s farm they pioneered was
called "Pensgard". There is some doubt about the name as some thinks
it was "Pinskar" and that the name is due to a narrow gap between
two hills close to where the houses wer raised, and that the south
east wind had to force between (pine), and thereby called "Pinskar".
Daniel Kallevik (Gardshistorie for Stegabergkrinsen) thinks that it
very reasonable that Jon and Kari gave the place the name "Pensgard"
because it was actual nice here. The relatives of them in Haugesund
writes the name "Pensgård" and some "Pensgaard".
Farmer Jon Baarsen, born in 1788, died in 1845, son of Baar Baarsen
and Sidsel at Westbøe in Sandeid. Married with Karen Jensdoter, born
at Håganvik around 1785, died 1862. They had 6 children:
1) Bård Jonsen born in 1810 in Vikedal settled at
Høie near Pensgard, farmer, died in 1882, 1828 married with Ingeborg
Elisabet Olsdoter, borned in 1808 died in 1891. They got 8 children.
2) Jens Jonsen Pensgård borned in 1816 at Stava (Pensgard is
situatet at Stava at Høie), carpenter and shipbuilder. He was
married in Schaare 2. September 1837 with Ingeborg Kristine
Endresdotter borned after 1815 at Grønhoug in Schaare. (Schaare now
called Skåre, is now part of Haugesund). He is mentioned in the
census paper as craftsman and in 1842 settled at Grønhoug and
mentioned as tenant farmer, 1848 settled at Hasseløy, mentioned with
shore rights. They got 7 children, 5 borned at Grønhaug and the 2
last at Hasseløy where he worked as shipbuilder at "Trimmeskjæret"
or "Pinsgardsflunå" as the skerry also was called. It was in the
middle of the strait between Hasseløy (an island) and the dry land.
In 1868 declared the farmers Ole Danielsen and Lars Amundsen at
Hasseløy that shipbuilder Jens Jonsen Pinsgård after 20 years use
had the rights to acquire the proprietary rights for the skerry.
Laiter it was taken over by Tønnes Eide. Jens Jonsen drowned
together with the sherif called Aas on Jens Johnsen boat on the way
from Utsira island, where Jens had 2 daugthers.
3) Osmund Jonsen borned in 1819 at Stava, died in 1887, married with
Berta Karine Ingebregtsdoter borned about 1818, died in 1897. He was
from about 1848 with shore rights at "nakken" at Stava. They got 7
children.
4) Sissel, borned in 1822, died the same year.
5) Jens Jonsen, the younger, borned in 1823 at Stava, died in 1894
in Stavanger, married with Martha Cesilie Olsdotter borned after
1824 and died in 1914 in Stavanger. He lived first at Pensgard place
with the parents, mentioned as inderste, but from 1856 cotter. 4
children.
